Basketball Recap: Cobden Comes Up Short

Cobden was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their seventh straight loss. They were six points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 39-33 heartbreaker at the hands of the Shawnee Redskins. The Appleknockers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Redskins apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in December of 2023.

Despite the loss, Cobden still got an impressive performance from Natalie Franklin, who dropped a double-double on 25 points and 12 boards. That was a full 75.8% of Cobden's points, marking the fourth time in a row she's posted more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Shawna Burgess, who had two points and 11 rebounds.

Emma Young was her usual excellent self, putting up 19 points along with eight boards and six steals for Shawnee. That makes it six consecutive games in which Young has scored at least a third of Shawnee's points. Berkli Holtman was another key player, posting ten points in addition to seven rebounds and three steals.

Cobden's loss dropped their record down to 3-8. As for Shawnee, the win (which was their seventh in a row) raised their record to 7-3.

Cobden and Galatia/Thompsonville will face off at 7:00 p.m. on Friday without much rest having both just played. As for Shawnee, they will face off against Century at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Century will roll in looking for their fourth straight victory, something Shawnee surely won't give up without a fight.
