There's no place like home for Vernon, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Friday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 38-35 win over the Ponder Lions on Friday. The high-flying offensive performance was a huge turnaround for Vernon considering their seven-point performance the game before.
Ty Scott continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, rushing for 149 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 9.3 yards per carry, and also throwing for 167 yards and two touchdowns while completing 75% of his passes. He showed off some serious burst, turning on the afterburners on one carry for 66 yards. 83 of those passing yards were hauled in by Evan Wilkinson.
Vernon wouldn't let Ponder keep a hold of the ball as they managed to force three fumbles. It was truly a group effort as Jacob Brown, Carter Kieschnick, and Landon Bynum picked up one apiece. Kieschnick also set a new season high mark in total tackles with seven. Another thorn in Ponder's side was Tyce Payne, who made 12 total tackles (2.0 for loss).
Ponder's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Johnny Arellano, who rushed for 131 yards and three touchdowns. Ponder is undefeated when Arellano posts 100 or more rushing yards, but 1-2 otherwise. Tyson Price was another key player, throwing for 338 yards and two touchdowns while completing 75% of his passes.
Vernon's record is now 4-2. As for Ponder, the defeat snapped their winning streak at three games and leaves them with a 4-2 record.
Vernon has already played their next matchup, a 41-21 victory against Boyd on the 11th. As for Ponder, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next contest, a 36-26 win against Bowie on the 11th.
