Basketball Recap: Southwest Takes a Loss

Southwest lost against Bertrand two weeks ago and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Southwest Roughriders were dealt a 72-42 loss at the hands of the Bertrand Vikings. The Roughriders were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 43-20.

Despite the loss, Southwest still got an impressive performance from Houston Billeter, who went 7 of 14 on his way to 17 points. That was a full 40.5% of Southwest's points, marking the 12th time in a row he's posted more than a third of the team's points. Deric Kelley was another key player, putting up six points.

Even though they lost, Southwest smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in ten consecutive matchups.

Thunder Nelson was his usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 24 points and ten boards for Bertrand. The dominant performance also gave Nelson a new career-high in steals (eight). Another player making a difference was Marcus Hernandez, who went 8 for 9 en route to 16 points.

Southwest's defeat dropped their record down to 6-10. As for Bertrand, the victory was the ninth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 14-4.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Southwest will venture away from home to challenge Dundy County-Stratton at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Bertrand, they will head out to square off against Alma at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Bertrand knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past ten games -- so hopefully Alma likes a good challenge.
