The Cardinal Gibbons Chiefs will face off against the Pompano Beach Golden Tornadoes at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Cardinal Gibbons is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.5 runs per game this season.
Cardinal Gibbons is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Florida's top teams: Western, who was ranked 21st at the time (Cardinal Gibbons was ranked 12th). The Chiefs fell just short of the Wildcats by a score of 3-1 on Tuesday. The Chiefs' defeat signaled the end of their six-game winning streak.
Lydia Berent spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on four hits and racked up 12 Ks. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Cardinal Gibbons saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Dakota Williams, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base.
Meanwhile, two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Pompano Beach walked away with it. They were the clear victors by a 16-1 margin over the Stallions on Monday. The Golden Tornadoes might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 11 games by eight runs or more this season.
MACAYLA RICE and BELLE WILLIAMS did most of the damage at the plate: RICE went a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs, while WILLIAMS went a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI, one stolen base, and one run. That's the most RBI WILLIAMS has posted since back in February. Emma Lamont was another key player, going a perfect 1-for-1 with two runs.
Pompano Beach always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .594. They are a perfect 8-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Pompano Beach has been performing well recently as they've won seven of their last nine matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-10 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.7 runs over those games. As for Cardinal Gibbons, their loss dropped their record down to 20-4.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Cardinal Gibbons has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Pompano Beach struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 7.1 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Everything went Cardinal Gibbons' way against Pompano Beach in their previous matchup last Monday, as Cardinal Gibbons made off with a 7-0 win. Do the Chiefs have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Golden Tornadoes turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
