Preview: South Effingham Mustangs vs. Evans Knights
The South Effingham Mustangs will be playing in front of their home fans against the Evans Knights at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. South Effingham will be strutting in after a victory while Evans will be coming in after a defeat.
South Effingham put the finishing touches on their third blowout victory of the season on Friday. They put the hurt on Grovetown with a sharp 40-14 victory. The victory was just what South Effingham needed coming off of a 38-14 loss in their prior match.
South Effingham can attribute much of their success to DeGenero Kaden, who threw for 145 yards and two touchdowns on only eight passes, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground. The team also got some help courtesy of Aubrey Heath, who picked up 80 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Evans' recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their third straight loss. They were outmatched by Brunswick on the road and fell 35-7. While losing is never fun, Evans can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Georgia football rankings (they are ranked 234th, while Brunswick is ranked 69th).
South Effingham's win bumped their record up to 6-3. As for Evans, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-6.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Friday's contest: South Effingham has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 221.1 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Evans struggles in that department as they've been averaging 189.2 per game. It's looking like Friday's game might have some serious battles in the trenches.
South Effingham came up short against Evans in their previous meeting back in November of 2022, falling 37-24. Thankfully for South Effingham, Dj Walton (who rushed for 70 yards and two touchdowns, and also threw for 112 yards and a touchdown while completing 73.3% of his passes) won't be suiting up this time.
