Baseball Preview: South Point Pointers vs. Portsmouth Trojans

The South Point Pointers have the luxury of staying home for another game and will welcome the Portsmouth Trojans at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

South Point will bounce into Monday's contest after beating Rock Hill, who they hadn't topped in nine consecutive meetings. Everything went South Point's way against Rock Hill on Friday as South Point made off with a 7-1 win.

Xathan Haney spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered one run (which was unearned) on six hits and racked up eight Ks.

On the hitting side, Kolton Layman was excellent, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4. The team also got some help courtesy of Corey Otzenberger, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and a triple.

Meanwhile, Portsmouth waltzed into their game on Friday with three straight wins... but they left with four. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Blue Devils a 10-0 shutout.

The team relied heavily on Trevin Brooks, who went 1-for-2 with a home run and three RBI. Another player making a difference was Malachi Loper, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-1.

South Point's victory bumped their record up to 12-7. As for Portsmouth, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won eight of their last nine matches, which provided a nice bump to their 13-4 record this season.
