Recap: Woodmere Academy vs. Luther Cougars

There's no place like home for Woodmere Academy, who bounced back after a tough loss on the road back in December of 2023. They strolled past Luther with points to spare on Thursday, taking the game 80-66. Given Woodmere Academy's advantage in MaxPreps' New York basketball rankings (they are ranked 155th, while Luther is ranked 430th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Despite the loss, Luther still got an impressive performance from Gavin Hugine, who scored 24 points along with three steals. The contest was Hugine's third in a row with at least ten points. Justin Trail was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 14 points and ten rebounds.

Woodmere Academy's win was their third straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 3-1. They've been dominating during the contests in that stretch too, as they've won by an average of 34.67 points. As for Luther, they have been struggling recently, as they've lost four of their last five games, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-6 record this season.

Woodmere Academy will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Friends Academy at 5:00 p.m. on January 24th. As for Luther, they will head out on the road to face off against Schechter at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
