Baseball Recap: Notre Dame Sets Scoring Season-High Against Wilbur Cross

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Notre Dame). They were the clear victors by a 17-2 margin over the Wilbur Cross Governors on Wednesday. The Green Knights have beaten the Governors the last four times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Governors has come to flipping the script.

Nico Bonilla looked comfortable as he struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits any time he's pitched this season.

On the hitting side, Alex Riga was incredible, firing off two home runs and five RBI while going 2-for-4. He also scored two runs, which is notable because Notre Dame is 4-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 5-6 otherwise. Nate Marczak was another key player, getting on base in all five of his plate appearances with three runs.

Notre Dame always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .622. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Notre Dame's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 9-7. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for Wilbur Cross, they are on a 21-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-19.

Coming up, Notre Dame will venture away from home to challenge Amity Regional at 4:15 p.m. on Friday. The Spartans will roll in looking for their seventh straight victory, something the Green Knights surely won't give up without a fight. As for Wilbur Cross, they will host Northwest Catholic at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
