Basketball Recap: Monte Vista Comes Up Short

Monte Vista made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Sanford, but they still couldn't quite topple them. The Pirates fell just short of the Mustangs by a score of 49-47 on Thursday. The loss continues a trend for the Pirates in their meetings with the Mustangs: they've now lost nine in a row.

When it comes to explaining why Monte Vista lost, don't look at Azariah Hurtado. Despite the final result, he posted 15 points and seven steals. Hurtado has been hot, having posted two or more steals the last five times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Manny Jiron, who scored ten points and six boards.

Colter Canty went supernovafor Sanford, putting up 21 points and three steals. Those 21 points gave Canty a new career-high. Ben Faucette was another key player, posting ten points.

Monte Vista's defeat dropped their record down to 9-7. As for Sanford, they pushed their record up to 15-1 with the win, which was their 15th straight at home dating back to last season.
