Baseball Recap: Springfield Victorious

Springfield took a seven-run loss the last time they faced off against Rochester, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. Springfield won by a run and slipped past Rochester 5-4. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win Springfield has posted since April 25th.

Karter Marks was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Brody Scheffler, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one double. He is becoming a predictor of Springfield's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 3-1 (and 10-13 when he doesn't). Connor Borah was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

Springfield hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Rochester struck out seven times.

Springfield's record is now 13-14. As for Rochester, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 13-11 record this season.

When Springfield and Rochester next hit the field, they'll be up against teams who recently just can't seem to lose. Springfield will try to stop Mt. Zion's three-game winning streak when they meet at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Rochester will challenge Roanoke-Benson/Lowpoint-Washburn and their four-game winning streak at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
