Volleyball Recap: Central Catholic's Undefeated Season over After Seven Games

After flying high against Billerica Memorial on Monday, Central Catholic came back down to earth. The Raiders took a 3-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Methuen Rangers on Wednesday. The loss put an end to the Raiders' undefeated start to the season.

Central Catholic started the match hot and won the first set, but they struggled down the stretch and lost the last three. The final score came out to 19-25, 25-17, 25-21, 26-24.

Julie Hall paced Central Catholic's offense, picking up 14 kills. Hall got some help from Madison Blanchet and her 34 assists. Merrisa Campo controlled things from the service line, finishing with four aces.

Methuen's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Kathryn Driend led the charge by getting five digs, four aces, and two blocks. Driend has been hot for a while, having also posted 14 or more assists the last nine times she's played. Caylee O'Brien was another key player, getting 12 digs and ten kills.

Having lost for the first time this season, Central Catholic fell to 6-1. As for Methuen, their victory bumped their record up to 6-2.

Central Catholic didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 3-1 win against Haverhill on the 19th. As for Methuen, they have also already played their next match, a 3-1 victory against Billerica Memorial on the 19th.
