Softball Game Preview: Waupaca Comets vs. Wrightstown Tigers

The Waupaca Comets will challenge the Wrightstown Tigers at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Waupaca has given up an average of 9.1 runs per game this season, but Friday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Waupaca fell victim to Clintonville and their airtight pitching crew on Tuesday. They came up short against the Truckers, falling 15-0. Having soared to a lofty 13 runs in the game before, the Comets' shutout was a dramatic turnaround.

Meanwhile, Wrightstown hadn't done well against Oconto Falls recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. The Tigers were the clear victors by a 12-6 margin over the Panthers. The Tigers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight contests by six runs or more this season.

Sophia Garcia spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and two unearned) runs on seven hits.

On the hitting side, Wrightstown got a massive performance out of Layla Beyer, who went 2-for-5 with one home run, three RBI, and one double. Those three RBI gave Beyer a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Elaina Verbeten, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base.

Wrightstown always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .550. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Oconto Falls only posted an OBP of .364.

Waupaca's loss dropped their record down to 4-12. As for Wrightstown, they are on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last ten games. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-6 record this season.
