Softball Recap: Washington Academy Triumphs

Washington Academy had lost three games straight , but after bumping their record up to 9-4 on Thursday that streak is in the rearview. They narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Bucksport Golden Bucks 2-1. This was payback for the Raiders, who suffered a 6-1 defeat the last time these two teams met.

Bella Cirone spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on four hits and racked up 13 Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time she's pitched this season.

At the plate, Washington Academy's victory was truly a team effort as three different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Rachel Keeton, who went 2-for-3 with one run.

Having lost for the first time this season, Bucksport fell to 13-1. Having soared to a lofty 16 runs in the game before, they couldn't push the score so high this time.

On Bucksport's side, they also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Natalie Simpson gave up two runs (both of which were unearned) on four hits and racked up 17 Ks. Those 17 strikeouts set a new season-high mark for Simpson.

Coming up, Bucksport will host Searsport at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Vikings have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 18.83 runs per game on average), something the Golden Bucks will no doubt try to take advantage of. Washington Academy will be paying especially close attention to Bucksport's match: after Bucksport faces off against Searsport, they'll take on Washington Academy again at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
