Football Recap: Spruce Mountain Skates Past Lake Region with Ease

With a playoff win on the line, Spruce Mountain rose to the challenge on Saturday. They breezed past the Lake Region Lakers to the tune of 44-8. Considering the Phoenix have won six matchups by more than 29 points this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.

Leading Spruce Mountain to victory were Dylan Jewett and Owen Kelvey. Jewett rushed for 113 yards and two scores on only 15 carries, while Kelvey gained 199 total yards and a touchdown. Kelvey got the majority of those receiving yards when he pulled down a pass and took off for a gain of 57 yards. The team also got some help courtesy of Levi Richards, who picked up 30 receiving yards and a pair of TDs.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Spruce Mountain was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 308 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 179 rushing yards in 13 consecutive games dating back to last season.

Spruce Mountain didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Richards, Kelvey, and Mason Harlow picked up one apiece.

Spruce Mountain's win bumped their record up to 7-1. As for Lake Region, they have been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-5 record this season.

Spruce Mountain will challenge Mt. Ararat on Friday. The Eagles will roll in looking for their eighth straight victory, something the Phoenix surely won't give up without a fight. Lake Region does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
