Basketball Game Preview: Mathis Pirates vs. George West Longhorns

The Mathis Pirates will take on the George West Longhorns at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Having both just faced considerable losses, both teams are looking to turn things around.

Mathis is headed into Friday's game looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their fourth straight game on Tuesday. They had to suffer through a 91-55 loss at the hands of Aransas Pass. While losing is never fun, the Pirates can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1216th, while the Panthers are ranked 574th).

Meanwhile, George West played a tough match on Tuesday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They lost 60-38 to West Oso. The Longhorns have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

George West's defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 13-10. As for Mathis, their loss dropped their record down to 8-10.

Mathis barely slipped by George West in their previous matchup back in February of 2024, winning 55-54. The rematch might be a little tougher for Mathis since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
