Football Recap: Healdsburg Starts Season with Defeat at Home

Healdsburg unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-field advantage in their season opener. They were just a hair shy of victory on Friday and fell 35-34 to the Washington Eagles. Sadly, the loss continues a streak the team started last season, making it eight in a row.

Healdsburg lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Frank Rea, who rushed for 71 yards and two TDs on only seven carries, and also threw for 251 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He didn't just play on offense: he also made six total tackles and defended one pass. Another player making a difference was Max Morris, who picked up 127 receiving yards and a pair of scores.

Roy Mertz was nothing short of spectacular for Washington: he threw for 149 yards and two TDs on only 14 passes, and also rushed for 45 yards and one touchdown.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Healdsburg will take on Lower Lake at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Washington, they will face off against Skyline at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
