Basketball Recap: Winston Red Birds vs. Grundy County/Newtown-Harris Panthers
The Winston Red Birds lost against the Grundy County/Newtown-Harris Panthers back in February of 2023, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Thursday. Winston fell 59-52 to the Panthers. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Winston in their matchups with the Panthers: they've now lost four in a row.
It was another big night for Corbin Axtell, who dropped a double-double on 32 points and 14 rebounds for Grundy County/Newtown-Harris. Axtell is on a roll when it comes to points, as he's now scored 15 or more in the last 15 games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Hunter Miller, who scored 13 points along with four steals.
Winston dropped their record down to 8-10 with that defeat, which was their fourth straight on the road. As for Grundy County/Newtown-Harris, the win was the seventh in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 16-3.
Coincidentally, both teams will both be playing Tri-County the next time they take the court. Grundy County/Newtown-Harris will host Tri-County at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, while Winston will head out to face them on Tuesday.
