Baseball Recap: Woodford County's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Saturday

Woodford County dropped their record down to 16-8 on Saturday, which also ended the team's four-game streak of wins. They fell 7-4 to the Sayre Spartans. Yellowjackets fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team's lost against the Spartans since on Saturday.

Ryan Cecil was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with one stolen base and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Devyn Wilkinson, who went 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

As for Sayre, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 20-3. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.8 runs over those games.

On Sayre's side, they got a great performance from Elliott Jansky as he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out six over six innings pitched. Those six strikeouts gave Jansky a new career-high.

At the plate, Sayre's victory was truly a team effort as five different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Brody Beall, who went 2-for-3 with four RBI, one run, and one double. Those four RBI gave Beall a new career-high.

Woodford County and Sayre should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Kentucky Rankings. The Yellowjackets (ranked 25th) will meet Shelby County (ranked 127th) at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Sayre will square off against Bryan Station at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday with a big rank advantage (2 vs. 142).
