Softball Recap: Old Orchard Beach Takes a Loss

Old Orchard Beach extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to 17 on Wednesday, dropping their season record down to 0-3 in the process. They came up short against the Buckfield Bucks, falling 11-1. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Seagulls of the 21-0 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2024.

As for Buckfield, they pushed their record up to 5-1 with the win, which was their 16th straight at home dating back to last season. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.3 runs on average over those games.

For Buckfield's part, Carmen Crockett was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 14 over six innings pitched. Crockett has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than one earned run any time she's pitched this season. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one double. That triple marked the first that she has hit this season.

In other batting news, Chloee Bennett was incredible, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. That stolen base was her first of the season. Cora Brewster was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

When Old Orchard Beach and Buckfield next hit the field, they'll be up against teams who recently just can't seem to lose. The Seagulls will face off against North Yarmouth Academy and their seven-game winning streak at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, Buckfield will try to stop Carrabec's five-game winning streak when they meet at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Bucks 1, the Cobras 4) so any runs scored will be well earned.
