Football Recap: Pen Argyl Takes a Tough Playoff Loss

Pen Argyl and Minersville squared off in some playoff action on Saturday, but Pen Argyl had to settle for second. They fell 35-27 to the Battlin' Miners. The matchup was a 21-21 toss-up at halftime, but the Green Knights couldn't quite close it out.

Mason Soos and Zachary Metzgar certainly did their best on Saturday to avoid the loss. Soos threw for 259 yards and three TDs while picking up 10.8 yards per attempt, while Metzgar picked up 127 receiving yards and one touchdown. Soos' passing game has become a key predictor of Pen Argyl's success: the team is 5-1 when his passer rating is 100 or higher, but only 2-3 otherwise.

Dante Carr produced another solid performance rushing for 300 yards and four scores while picking up 14.3 yards per carry for Minersville. With that strong performance, Carr is now averaging an impressive 113.8 rushing yards per game. Minersville also got a significant boost from Derek Derenzo, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 130 yards.

Pen Argyl's defeat dropped their record down to 7-4. As for Minersville, they pushed their record up to 9-2 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home.

Pen Argyl does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Minersville, they will face off against Williams Valley at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Battlin' Miners will need to watch out since the Vikings have now posted at least 31 points in their last five games.
