Softball Recap: Miyamura Has No Trouble Against Shiprock

Miyamura was handed a heart-breaking two-run loss in their last contest, but they sure didn't let that happen against Shiprock on Tuesday. The Patriots were the clear victors by a 12-1 margin over the Chieftains. The result was nothing new for the Patriots, who have now won seven matchups by ten runs or more so far this season.

Phillicity Nez made a splash while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. What's more, she posted five strikeouts, the most she's had since back in March. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.

In other batting news, Celeste Cano and Alexandria Begay did most of the damage at the plate: Cano scored four runs and stole two bases while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances, while Begay scored a run and stole three bases while going 2-for-3. Those four runs gave Cano a new career-high.

Miyamura's win was their first in the district, bumping their district record up to 1-4 and their overall record up to 9-8. As for Shiprock, they have been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-12 record this season.

Miyamura will challenge Kirtland Central at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Patriots' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Broncos have averaged an impressive 9.2 runs per game this season. As for Shiprock, they will face off against Aztec at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Tigers will roll in looking for their ninth straight victory, something the Chieftains surely won't give up without a fight.
