Basketball Game Preview: University City Centurions vs. Cathedral Catholic Dons

University City hasn't had much luck against Cathedral Catholic recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The University City Centurions will face off against the Cathedral Catholic Dons at 7:30 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.

University City is headed into the game after thoroughly thrashing La Jolla: they outscored them in every quarter. University City blew past La Jolla 74-49 on Tuesday. The matchup was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point the Centurions had established a 23 point advantage.

It was another big night for Dylan Griffin, who went 16 of 23 on his way to 38 points along with eight rebounds and three steals. His evening made it eight games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Mathias Baluyot, who posted eight points in addition to eight assists and eight boards.

University City was working as a unit and finished the game with 18 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since back in February of 2024.

Meanwhile, Cathedral Catholic earned an 80-67 win over Mira Mesa last Thursday.

Cathedral Catholic's win came from a few key players University City will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was PJ Jourdain, who went 11 for 19 en route to 25 points and seven rebounds. He continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Patrick O'Brien was another key player, going 8 of 14 on his way to 21 points along with seven boards and six assists.

Cathedral Catholic is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five contests, which provided a nice bump to their 14-7 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 74.2 points per game. As for University City, they now have a winning record of 11-10.

University City came up short against Cathedral Catholic when the teams last played on January 10th, falling 65-58. Can University City avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
