Basketball Game Preview: El Capitan Vaqueros vs. Mount Miguel Matadors

El Capitan hasn't had much luck against Mount Miguel recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The El Capitan Vaqueros are taking a road trip to challenge the Mount Miguel Matadors at 7:00 p.m. El Capitan knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past three games -- so hopefully Mount Miguel likes a good challenge.

Last Tuesday, El Capitan lost to Steele Canyon on the road by a 72-55 margin. While losing is never fun, the Vaqueros can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 1057th, while the Cougars are ranked 489th).

Despite the defeat, El Capitan had strong showings from Jason Wilson, who went 7-for-14 en route to 20 points, and Andy Gerardo-Novelo, who dropped a double-double with 12 points and ten rebounds. Wilson continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Kayden McMahon, who posted three points and six boards.

Even though they lost, El Capitan smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in six consecutive contests.

Meanwhile, Mount Miguel was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They received a blow as they fell 53-37 to Southwest SD. The match marked the Matadors' lowest-scoring game so far this season.

Mount Miguel's defeat dropped their record down to 11-13. As for El Capitan, their loss dropped their record down to 7-20.

El Capitan came up short against Mount Miguel in their previous meeting back in January, falling 65-54. Can El Capitan avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
