Basketball Recap: Hunter Taylor's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Rocksprings over Utopia

Rocksprings came into their game on Friday off a hard-fought close win, but unfortunately suffered a serious change of fortune. They came up short against the Utopia Buffaloes, falling 79-59. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Angoras have suffered since January 10th.

Rocksprings lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Hunter Taylor, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and 13 rebounds. Taylor's evening made it seven games in a row in which he has scored at least 17 points. Roy Estrada was another key player, going 8 of 12 en route to 20 points.

Utopia got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Jett Smothers out in front who posted 21 points along with eight assists and three steals. The dominant performance gave Smothers a new career-high in assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Taylor Wiekamp, who put up 14 points in addition to seven boards and four steals.

Rocksprings' loss dropped their record down to 10-13. As for Utopia, their victory was their tenth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 26-4.

Coming up, Rocksprings will host Comstock at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in Rocksprings' favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last six matchups. As for Utopia, they will face off against Leakey at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Utopia is facing Leakey at the right time seeing as Leakey is stuck on a 22-game losing streak.
