For the first time this season, Christopher will have a chance to prove themselves in a conference matchup. After each having a week off, they and the Leigh Longhorns will shake off the rust and duke it out at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams are strolling into their games after big wins in their previous games.
Christopher took a loss when they played away from home back in September, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed last Thursday. Everything went their way against Overfelt as they made off with a 28-6 victory. The score at the end of the third wound up being the final score as the Cougars just coasted through the last quarter.
One reason for the win was Christopher's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Dominic Marini, Samuel Hernandez, and Zachary Souza, who each picked up one sack apiece. Adrian Leon got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Meanwhile, Leigh had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 30.5 points) and they went ahead and made it three last Friday. They were the clear victors by a 35-14 margin over the Raiders. The Longhorns might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four contests by 21 points or more this season.
Christopher better keep an eye on Blake Zanger. He was instrumental in Leigh's win, rushing for 139 yards and three scores on only nine carries. Zanger's rushing production has been exceptional as that marked his seventh straight game with at least 106 rushing yards dating back to last season. Miles Huntington did his part to keep the secondary busy, picking up 110 receiving yards.
Christopher now has a winning record of 3-2. As for Leigh, their win bumped their record up to 4-1.
Thursday's matchup might be decided on the ground. Christopher has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 211.2 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Leigh struggles in that department as they've been averaging 213 rushing yards. There's a good chance Thursday's game turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Everything went Christopher's way against Leigh when the teams last played back in October of 2024, as Christopher made off with a 32-7 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cougars since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
