Mount St. Mary Academy has gone a perfect 8-0 against Mount Mercy Academy recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Saturday. The Thunder will host the Magic at 3:00 p.m.
On Monday, Mount St. Mary Academy didn't have quite enough to beat Sacred Heart Academy and fell 3-1. The Thunder haven't had much luck with the Sharks recently, as the team has come up short the last three times they've met.
Taylor Zajac spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and two unearned) runs on three hits and racked up 11 Ks.
At the plate, Mount St. Mary Academy saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Molly Reynolds, who went 2-for-3 with one triple and one RBI. That triple was Reynolds' first of the season.
Meanwhile, Mount Mercy Academy hadn't done well against Nichols recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. The Magic put the hurt on the Vikings with a sharp 12-6 win. The Magic might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won three contests by six runs or more this season.
Taylor Jahn was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out 16 batters over seven innings while giving up five earned (and one unearned) runs off eight hits (and only one walk). Jahn was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-5 with three runs and one RBI.
In other batting news, Mount Mercy Academy let Riley Coughlin and Laila Golda run wild. Coughlin went 3-for-5 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs, while Golda went a perfect 5-for-5 with one home run, five runs, and one double. Those four RBI gave Coughlin a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Natalie McOwen, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one double.
Mount Mercy Academy was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .395. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .308 or higher in four consecutive games.
Mount Mercy Academy's victory bumped their record up to 5-1. As for Mount St. Mary Academy, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-3.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Saturday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Mount St. Mary Academy has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.2 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Mount Mercy Academy struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 10.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Mount St. Mary Academy beat Mount Mercy Academy 7-2 in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. Do the Thunder have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Magic turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
