Softball Recap: Solon Has No Trouble Against Shaker Heights

Solon won the last time they faced Shaker Heights and things went their way on Friday too. The Comets put the hurt on the Red Raiders with a sharp 11-5 win. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Comets.

Grace Gerhard made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in April.

In other batting news, Ali Palsa and Evan Barmen did most of the damage at the plate: Palsa went a perfect 4-for-4 with one stolen base and one run, while Barmen went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Those two hits gave Barmen a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Alyssa Gerome, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

Solon kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are 5-1 when they post 11 or more hits.

Solon pushed their record up to 7-13 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Shaker Heights, with the loss, they broke their five-game winning streak and moved their record to 12-5.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Solon will welcome Mayfield at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. The Comets' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Wildcats have averaged an impressive 6.2 runs per game this season. As for Shaker Heights, they will look to defend their home field on Monday against Strongsville at 5:00 p.m.
