Basketball Recap: South Mecklenburg Comes Up Short

South Mecklenburg was the 48-35 winner over Cuthbertson when they last played one another back in November of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Sabres fell 70-62 to the Cavaliers on Friday.

When it comes to explaining why South Mecklenburg lost, don't look at Jim Gatehouse. Despite the final result, he shot 50% from the field on his way to 27 points along with six rebounds and three blocks. The contest was Gatehouse's fourth in a row with at least 17 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Anthony Davis, who posted nine points.

Ethan Nelson was nothing short of spectacular for Cuthbertson: he dropped a double-double with 21 points and 11 boards. Nelson is also crushing it when it comes to steals: he's grabbed at least two every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Braylen Cheek, who scored 12 points and seven rebounds.

South Mecklenburg's loss dropped their record down to 2-2. As for Cuthbertson, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 4-1.

Looking ahead, South Mecklenburg and Greensboro Day School will face off at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday without much rest, having both just played. The Sabres will need to watch out since the Bengals have now posted at least 55 points in their last six games. As for Cuthbertson, they won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Blythewood at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
