Baseball Recap: Corona Takes Down Ranked Poly Prep Country Day

Corona is ranked highly in their home state and on Saturday they took on another highly ranked team in the form of Poly Prep Country Day. The Panthers narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the Blue Devils 3-1.

Corona got a great performance from Jason Gerfers as he pitched five innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. What's more, Gerfers posted five strikeouts, the most he's had since back in March.

On the hitting side, Anthony Murphy was excellent, scoring a run while going 3-for-4.

Corona's win bumped their record up to 17-1. As for Poly Prep Country Day, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 4-7.

Looking ahead, Corona will look to defend their home field on Monday against Santiago at 4:00 p.m. Both teams are headed into the matchup with plenty of momentum (the Panthers have won eight straight at home dating back to last season, while the Sharks won three straight on the road), something that'll have to change. As for Poly Prep Country Day, they will venture away from home to face off against Iona Prep at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
