Softball Game Preview: Mesa Verde Mavericks vs. Highlands Scots

The Mesa Verde Mavericks are taking a road trip to challenge the Highlands Scots at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Mesa Verde has four straight victories, Highlands has eight straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Mesa Verde made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Vacaville Christian, but they still couldn't quite topple them. The Mavericks put the hurt on the Falcons with a sharp 16-8 win on Wednesday. The result was nothing new for the Mavericks, who have now won five games by eight runs or more so far this season.

Mesa Verde got a massive performance out of Madison Martin, who went 3-for-4 with two triples, four RBI, and one run. Those two triples gave Martin a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Addisyn Niellsen, who scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.

Mesa Verde always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .561. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .561 or higher in five consecutive matchups.

Meanwhile, Highlands lost 20-8 to Mesa Verde on Tuesday.

Mesa Verde's victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 5-3. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 21.8 runs over those games. As for Highlands, their loss dropped their record down to 1-9.

Everything went Mesa Verde's way against Highlands in their previous matchup on Tuesday, as Mesa Verde made off with a 20-8 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mavericks since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
