Soccer Game Preview: Gateway vs. Canterbury

The Gateway Eagles will challenge the Canterbury Cougars at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Gateway took a loss when they played away from home on Friday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Tuesday. They were the clear victor by a 4-1 margin over LaBelle. The high-scoring effort was just what the Eagles needed considering they were shutout in their previous match.

Meanwhile, Canterbury put another one in the bag on Monday to keep their perfect season alive. Their defense stepped up to hand The Village School of Naples an 8-0 shutout. The Cougars' defense has been rock solid lately; the team hasn't given up a goal in their last four games.

Their offense was hitting The Village School of Naples from everywhere, as six different players booted in a goal. Josh Wiese led that balanced group of strikers and accounted for two goals all by himself.

Canterbury pushed their record up to 10-0 with the victory, which was their sixth straight at home. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they scored 28 goals over those six contests. As for Gateway, their win bumped their record up to 7-3-1.

Gateway might still be hurting after the 5-1 loss they got from Canterbury in their previous matchup back in December of 2022. Can Gateway avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
