Baseball Recap: Gillespie Continues Road Dominance on Tuesday

Gillespie had won six straight on the road, but on Tuesday they bumped their record up to 14-8 to make it seven. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 4-2 victory over the Southwestern Piasa Birds. For the Miners, this counts as revenge for the 7-3 win the Piasa Birds walked away with the last time they faced one another back in April of 2024.

Luke Schuckenbrock was excellent, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs. He has become a key player for Gillespie: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 5-8 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Jack Kaylor, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

As for Southwestern, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 10-18. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat they have suffered since April 16th.

On Southwestern's side, Johnny Kunz was cooking despite his team's loss, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one run and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Ike Austin, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances.

We've got plenty of inter-conference action coming up soon. Gillespie is set to take on their familiar foe Hillsboro at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Southwestern will challenge rival Carlinville at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
