Baseball Recap: Martinsville Takes a Loss

Martinsville extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to ten on Wednesday, dropping their season record down to 0-9 in the process. They fell 5-2 to the Whiteland Warriors. If the Artesians were looking for revenge after losing 5-1 to the Warriors when the teams met back in April of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Martinsville got a good showing from Isaac Gillum, who pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits.

On the hitting side, Martinsville saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jaxton Proctor, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double.

As for Whiteland, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-5. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 3 runs in those games.

On Whiteland's side, they let Maalik Perkins and Peyton Dickens run wild. Perkins went 1-for-3 with three stolen bases, one run, and one RBI, while Dickens got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases and one RBI. Whiteland is undefeated when Perkins posts two or more stolen bases, but 4-5 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Sebastian Walton, who got on base in two of his three plate appearances with three stolen bases and two runs.

While Martinsville had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
