Basketball Recap: Ashlyn Stayton Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Goreville

Elverado/Zeigler-Royalton hadn't done well against Goreville recently (they were 0-5 in their previous five matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Monday. Elverado/Zeigler-Royalton came out on top against the Goreville Blackcats by a score of 58-51. For Elverado/Zeigler-Royalton, this counts as revenge for the 75-18 win Goreville walked away with the last time they faced one another back in February of 2024.

Elverado/Zeigler-Royalton's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Ashlyn Stayton, who almost dropped a double-double with nine points and 26 rebounds. Stayton has been hot recently, having posted nine or more boards the last four times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Brylee Martin, who posted 12 points and five assists.

Goreville's loss came despite strong showings from Lydia Kwiatkowski and Jaidyn Wiesen. Kwiatkowski scored 22 points in addition to seven assists and seven steals, while Wiesen dropped a double-double with 19 points and ten rebounds. With that strong performance, Kwiatkowski is now averaging an impressive 2.2 steals per game.

Elverado/Zeigler-Royalton's record now sits at 8-21. As for Goreville, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-25.
