Recap: Monterey Plainsmen vs. Lubbock-Cooper Pirates
The Monterey Plainsmen came tearing into Friday's matchup with 11 straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 27.1 points) and they left with even more momentum. They pulled ahead with a 77-76 photo finish over Lubbock-Cooper. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Aaliyah Chavez was her usual excellent self, scoring 39 points along with five rebounds and three steals. The match was her 23rd in a row with at least ten points. Kinzy Johnson was another key contributor, scoring 18 points along with six rebounds.
Monterey is on a roll lately: they've won 13 of their last 14 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 19-5 record this season. As for Lubbock-Cooper, their loss dropped their record down to 14-8.
Monterey's road trip will continue as they head out to face Wylie at 6:15 p.m. on January 2, 2024. Wylie will be looking to keep their five-game home win streak alive. Lubbock-Cooper won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against North Crowley at 10:30 a.m. on December 30th.
