The Coronado Cougars will face off against the Faith Lutheran Crusaders at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
Coronado is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Nevada's top teams: Foothill, who was ranked tenth at the time (Coronado was ranked 16th). The Cougars were just a hair shy of victory on Friday and fell 43-42 to the Falcons. The contest was a 14-14 toss-up at halftime, but the Cougars couldn't quite close it out.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Layton Bachhuber, who picked up 141 receiving yards and a pair of TDs. Jackson Humphries was another key passer, throwing for 258 yards and four touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Faith Lutheran came into Friday's matchup having lost four straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They simply couldn't be stopped on Friday as they easily beat Basic 34-6. The Crusaders pushed the score to 27-6 by the end of the third, a deficit the Wolves had little chance of recovering from.
Coronado better keep an eye on Justin Robbins. He was instrumental in Faith Lutheran's win, rushing for 89 yards and a pair of scores on only 12 carries. Jacob Dushoff also deserves some recognition as he posted his first receiving yards of the season.
Faith Lutheran's run defense was locked in: Basic could only muster 3.2 yards per carry. The team can thank John Trumbull for the heroic effort on defense: he. Faith Lutheran's ground attack was stronger, having averaged 5.3.
Faith Lutheran's defense didn't let the opposing QB, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for five sacks. Basic's QB won't forget Joel Sandoval anytime soon given he sacked him twice. Sandoval is also crushing it when it comes to total tackles: he's made at least five every time he's taken the field this season. Another thorn in Basic's side was Trumbull, who picked up a sack and made nine total tackles in addition to snagging an interception.
This is the second loss in a row for Coronado and nudges their season record down to 2-6. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 28.0 points over those games. As for Faith Lutheran, their win was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 2-6.
