Basketball Recap: Jazmine Burns' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Douglas Byrd over Cape Fear

Douglas Byrd lost against Cape Fear back in February of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Wednesday. The Douglas Byrd Eagles fell 52-39 to the Cape Fear Colts. The Eagles have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Douglas Byrd's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jazmine Burns, who posted 13 points and five boards. Burns has been hot, having also posted two or more steals the last five times she's played. Another player making a difference was JayLinda Depina, who put up seven points and five steals.

Elisabeth Kirkland continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Cape Fear, dropping a double-double on 26 points and 12 rebounds. Kirkland is trending in the right direction considering she's improved her point production for four straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Shanel Sutton, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 15 boards.

Douglas Byrd's loss dropped their record down to 7-7. As for Cape Fear, the win also got them back to even at 7-7.

Douglas Byrd wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 43-37 defeat against Gray's Creek on the 31st. As for Cape Fear, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 51-42 loss against Seventy-First on the 31st.
