Baseball Recap: Mahwah Find Success

Mahwah hadn't done well against Ramsey recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Wednesday. The Thunderbirds walked away with a 4-1 victory over the Rams. For the Thunderbirds, this counts as revenge for the 10-0 win the Rams walked away with the last time they faced one another back in May of 2024.

Mahwah got a great performance from Brendan Kelly as he pitched five innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Kelly is becoming a predictor of the Thunderbirds' success: when he allows at most one earned run the team is 4-1 (and 7-8 when he doesn't).

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Matt Mackey, who went 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Ryan Hawken, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

The victory made it two in a row for Mahwah and bumps their season record up to 11-9. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 1 runs in those games. As for Ramsey, they moved to 14-5 with that defeat, which also ended their five-game winning streak.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Mahwah will venture away from home to square off against NV - Old Tappan at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Golden Knights will roll in looking for their fifth straight victory, something the Thunderbirds surely won't give up without a fight. As for Ramsey, they will head out to challenge Union City at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The Soaring Eagles' pitching crew has only allowed 3.5 runs per game this season, so the Rams' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
