Half Moon Bay and Menlo-Atherton are an even 4-4 against one another since April of 2015, but likely not for long. The Cougars will challenge the Bears at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Half Moon Bay is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.1 runs per game this season.
Half Moon Bay made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Sequoia, but they still couldn't quite topple them. The Cougars fell just short of the Ravens by a score of 7-5 on Friday. The loss continues a trend for the Cougars in their meetings with the Ravens: they've now lost four in a row.
Mia Modena was cooking despite her team's loss, going 3-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. The team also got some help courtesy of Bailey Gunning, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Menlo-Atherton had just enough and edged out Terra Nova 13-12 on Thursday. The Bears haven't had any issues with the Tigers recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive win against them.
Gracy Nava made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she pitched 3.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off one hit. Nava was also big at the plate, going 2-for-5 with one stolen base and one run.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Olivia Rodgers, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with three stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. Those four hits gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Carey Maletis, who went 2-for-4 with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base.
Menlo-Atherton always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .595. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Terra Nova only posted an OBP of .436.
Menlo-Atherton's victory was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 12-6. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.2 runs over those games. As for Half Moon Bay, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-13.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Half Moon Bay has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.8 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Menlo-Atherton struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 5.1 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Half Moon Bay might still be hurting after the 11-1 loss they got from Menlo-Atherton in their previous matchup back in April. Can the Cougars avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
