Softball Game Preview: Sacred Heart-Griffin Cyclones vs. Carlinville Cavaliers

The Sacred Heart-Griffin Cyclones are taking a road trip to square off against the Carlinville Cavaliers at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Sacred Heart-Griffin hasn't scored more than two runs for four games straight, a trend the squad is eager to reverse.

On Wednesday, Sacred Heart-Griffin needed a bit of extra time to put away Springfield. They came out on top against the Senators by a score of 2-1 (the very same score they lost by in their prior game). The victory was some much needed relief for the Cyclones as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.

Kenzie Wieland was a major factor no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 18 over eight innings pitched. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than ten strikeouts in ten consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one home run.

Wieland wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Addie Malek, who went 1-for-3 with one triple. Lucy Wegner also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen bases of the season.

Meanwhile, Carlinville fell victim to Gillespie and their airtight pitching crew on Tuesday. They came up short against the Miners, falling 6-0. The Cavaliers have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Carlinville's defeat dropped their record down to 8-5. As for Sacred Heart-Griffin, their record now sits at 5-6.

Sacred Heart-Griffin came out on top in a nail-biter against Carlinville when the teams last played back in May of 2024, sneaking past 4-3. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cyclones since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
