Basketball Recap: Douglas Byrd Comes Up Short

Douglas Byrd was the 49-39 winner over Gray's Creek when they last played one another back in December of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Douglas Byrd Eagles took a 39-28 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Gray's Creek Bears on Tuesday. The Eagles have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Despite the loss, Douglas Byrd still got an impressive performance from Jazmine Burns, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and ten rebounds. That was a full 57.1% of Douglas Byrd's points, marking the third time in a row she's posted more than a third of the team's points. Sheryraye Johnson was another key player, putting up six points and nine rebounds.

Leading Gray's Creek to victory were Tatyana Smith and Layla Fox. Smith dropped a double-double on 12 points and ten boards, while Fox almost dropped a double-double on ten points and nine boards. The dominant performance also gave Fox a new career-high in assists (four). Another player making a difference was Naria Wright, who went 5 of 8 on her way to 10 points in addition to seven rebounds and three steals.

Douglas Byrd's defeat dropped their record down to 5-5. As for Gray's Creek, they now have a winning record of 6-5.

Douglas Byrd wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 49-32 win against Harnett Central on the 8th. As for Gray's Creek, they will take on Lumberton at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
