Baseball Recap: Smithfield Snags Tenth Victory in Last 12 Games

There's no place like home for Smithfield, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Wednesday. They walked away with a 7-2 victory over the Coventry Oakers on Saturday. For the Sentinels, this counts as revenge for the 1-0 win the Oakers walked away with the last time they faced one another back in May of 2024.

Moe Villandry was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Villandry was even better at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. That home run marked the first that he has launched this season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Luke Dwyer, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three stolen bases and two runs. Those three stolen bases gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Jacob Sylvester, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one run.

Smithfield is on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 12 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-6 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.2 runs on average over those games. As for Coventry, their defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 7-11.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Smithfield will take on rival South Kingstown at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Sentinels 3.3, the Rebels 2.5) so any runs scored will be well earned. Meanwhile, Coventry is set to challenge their familiar foe North Kingstown at 4:00 p.m. on Monday.
