Softball Recap: Liberty Beats Hemet for Their Fifth Straight Victory

Liberty proved they can win big last Wednesday (they won by 12) and on Friday they proved they can win the close ones too. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-6 victory over the Hemet Bulldogs. Winning may never get old, but the Bison sure are getting used to it with their fifth in a row.

Janessa Guigliano spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five earned (and one unearned) runs on 12 hits and racked up eight Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in five consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Yasmine Lopez, who went 1-for-3 with one home run and four RBI. Those four RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Cameryn Rutkoff, who went 1-for-4 with one home run.

Liberty always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .526. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Liberty's win bumped their record up to 10-7. As for Hemet, the loss snapped their winning streak at five games and leaves them with a 13-4 record.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Liberty will take on Arlington at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Arlington's pitching crew has only allowed 3.4 runs per game this season, so Liberty's hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Hemet, they will have a little extra prep time after the defeat as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Paloma Valley at 3:45 p.m. on April 7.
