Softball Recap: Basic's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Friday

Basic dropped their record down to 9-8 on Friday, which also ended the team's four-game streak of wins. They lost 10-3 to the Doral Academy Red Rock Dragons. The Wolves were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Dragons apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in May of 2024.

Melanie Hughes spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and six unearned) runs on 11 hits and racked up ten Ks. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 5.2 strikeouts per game.

At the plate, Mercedes Escarcega made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Mia Frias, who went 3-for-4 with two runs.

As for Doral Academy Red Rock, the victory (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 17-3. The result was nothing new for the Dragons, who have now won 11 matchups by seven runs or more so far this season.

On Doral Academy Red Rock's side, EmmaLynn Hussey and Hailey Ufer made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Hussey tossed 2.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Meanwhile, Ufer pitched two innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two hits in five consecutive appearances. At the plate, Hussey went 2-for-4 with one home run and two runs, while Ufer went 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Megan Upp, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. That's the most hits she has posted since back in March.

Basic didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 6-4 win against Bonanza on the 15th. As for Doral Academy Red Rock, they have also already played their next contest, an 8-4 victory against Spring Valley on the 15th.
