Grant Gardner tossed a big game, striking out 14 batters over 5.2 innings while giving up three earned runs off five hits. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in April of 2024.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Austin Price, who scored a run while going 2-for-2. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March of 2024. Ethan Andujar was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, while Hickory Grove Christian put up plenty of runs on Tuesday, the same can't be said for Gaston Day. Hickory Grove Christian blew past Gaston Day 12-0. The victory continues a trend for the Lions in their matchups with the Spartans: they've now won nine in a row.
Gavin Pelow was incredible, going 2-for-3 with three stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. He also hit a triple, marking his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Ben Green, who scored two runs.
Covenant Day pushed their record up to 4-1 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of two runs across that stretch. As for Hickory Grove Christian, their victory bumped their record up to 4-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Thursday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Covenant Day has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 14.2 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Hickory Grove Christian struggles in that department as they've been averaging 10.4 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Covenant Day might still be hurting after the 22-4 defeat they got from Hickory Grove Christian in their previous meeting back in March of 2021. Can Covenant Day avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
