Baseball Game Preview: Poth Pirates vs. Nixon-Smiley Mustangs

Poth has gone 7-1 against Nixon-Smiley recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Monday. The Pirates will be playing at home against the Mustangs at 7:00 p.m. Poth is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.4 runs per game this season.

On Friday, Poth got the win against Luling by a conclusive 11-1. The victory continues a trend for the Pirates in their matchups with the Eagles: they've now won three in a row.

Braden Arruda made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one walk in five consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, earning one RBI, one run, and one stolen base.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Major Luna, who fired off three triples, three RBI, and one stolen base while going 4-for-5. Those four hits gave him a new career-high. Collin Korb was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with three runs and one stolen base.

Poth always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .538. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Luling only posted an OBP of .227.

Meanwhile, Nixon-Smiley sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-6 win over Karnes City on Friday.

Poth's victory bumped their record up to 14-6. As for Nixon-Smiley, their win bumped their record up to 5-8.

Everything went Poth's way against Nixon-Smiley in their previous matchup back in April of 2025, as Poth made off with a 10-0 victory. Will the Pirates repeat their success, or do the Mustangs have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
