Softball Recap: Chewelah Cougars vs. Newport Grizzlies
Chewelah had lost three straight at home, but on Tuesday they dropped their record down to 4-13 to make it four. They lost 15-2 to the Newport Grizzlies. The Cougars were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Grizzlies apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in May of 2018.
As for Newport, the victory (which was their tenth in a row) raised their record to 12-5. The team dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 10 runs.
For Newport's part, Lili Hall made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over five innings pitched. Hall has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two hits in five consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in all five of her plate appearances with four stolen bases and three runs. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, Makayla Peone was a standout: she went 2-for-3 with five stolen bases and two runs. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 1.1 stolen bases per game. Flavi Stutzman also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.
While Chewelah had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 2:00 p.m. on Friday.
