Basketball Game Preview: South Decatur Cougars vs. North Decatur Chargers

South Decatur is 2-8 against North Decatur since January of 2021 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Cougars will host the Chargers at 7:30 p.m. North Decatur took a loss in their last matchup and will be looking to turn the tables on South Decatur, who comes in off a win.

South Decatur is coming home in high spirits after they had to open their season on the road against Trinity Lutheran. South Decatur snuck past Trinity Lutheran with a 69-63 victory on Saturday.

South Decatur got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Drake Scaggs out in front who shot 67% from the field en route to 28 points and eight assists. The game was Scaggs' fourth in a row with at least 15 points. Cayden Drake was another key player, going 8-for-15 to rack up 16 points and seven boards.

Meanwhile, North Decatur unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-court advantage in their season opener. They took a hard 64-45 fall against Greensburg on Tuesday.

South Decatur will need to focus on slowing down Logan O'Dell, one of several North Decatur players who made an impact when they last played. He posted 12 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Owen Rennekamp, who scored ten points and three steals.

Things could have been worse for South Decatur, but things could have been a whole lot better as they took a 56-42 loss to North Decatur in their previous matchup back in January. Thankfully for the Cougars, Brady Mauer (who shot 50% from the field on his way to 28 points and eight rebounds) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
