Basketball Recap: Zion Lanier Key Part of a Team Effort in Panthers Win

It was a proper cat-fight when Portal challenged Claxton on Tuesday. The Portal Panthers walked away with a 61-51 win over the Claxton Tigers. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 70-67 back in December of 2024.

Portal's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Zion Lanier led the charge by going 5 of 10 en route to 18 points and seven rebounds. Kobi Burroughs was another key player, putting up 11 points.

Several Tigers players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Dereon Brewton, who posted 13 points and seven boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Isaiah Philyaw, who earned 14 points.

The victory made it two in a row for Portal and bumps their season record up to 9-11. As for Claxton, they have also been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last seven matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-11 record this season.

Portal didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 63-52 loss against McIntosh County Academy on the 31st. Claxton has also already played their next game, a 57-54 defeat against Emanuel County Institute on the 29th.
