Preview: Pueblo South Colts vs. Pueblo West Cyclones
The Pueblo South Colts will head out on the road to challenge the Pueblo West Cyclones at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
Last Tuesday, Pueblo South came up short against Pueblo County and fell 65-54.
Maurice Austin put forth a good effort for the losing side as he scored 32 points along with three steals. That was a full 59.3% of Pueblo South's points, marking the 14th time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Will Flowers, who scored nine points along with six rebounds.
Even though they lost, Pueblo South smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Pueblo West posted their biggest win since November 30, 2023 on Saturday. They breezed by Air Academy on the road to the tune of 65-35. The match was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point Pueblo West had established a 21 point advantage.
Malachi Stump and Andrew Trujillo were among the main playmakers for Pueblo West as the former scored 15 points along with five steals and the latter scored 15 points along with seven rebounds and three blocks. That's the first time this season that Trujillo scored 15 or more points. Micah Campos was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with six assists and five steals.
Pueblo South now has a losing record at 7-8. As for Pueblo West, they have been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight games, which provided a nice bump to their 9-6 record this season.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Pueblo South have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 21.9 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Pueblo West struggles in that department as they've been averaging 35.2 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
